A 63 year old man was arrested for punching a 5 year old baby on the face in Tesco store and claiming that he thought it was a doll.
David Hardley approached the store where the baby was lying in a shopping Trolley and punched her while her mom showed her to friends.
The little girl is said to have been left in tears and a red face before being taken to the hospital where she stayed for seven hours.
Mr Hardley told the court that he thought the baby was a doll and he could never hurt a baby intentionally.
Although Mr Hardley is a first time offender, has young children at home and has never hurt them in anyway, the prosecution insists that he did it intentionally.
He is reportedly on the verge of suicide even though he was bailed out on conditions that he can not have any contact with children under the age of 18 unsupervised.
